Absorbents are ingredients, usually solids, with a large surface area which can attract dissolved or finely dispersed substances from another medium. By strict definitions, absorbents are substances which literally imbibe the absorbate, while adsorbents are materials which attach other substances to their surface. The distinction between absorbents and adsorbents is sometimes difficult, and the following listing includes both absorbents and adsorbents. A typical example is the use of a solid, such as Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch, to absorb lipids from hair in a dry shampoo. Absorbents are useful processing aids for the preparation of clear liquids. |
