Colorants, or color additives, are those cosmetic ingredients which impart color to the skin or its appendages or are used to color finished products. Ingredients which have this function are listed below.
In the United States, the European Union (EU) Member States, and many other countries, colorants are subject to a wide range of regulatory restrictions. A listing of approved colorants (except hair colors) that may be used in the U.S. may be found in U.S. Food and Drug Administration color additive regulations, 21 CFR 73 and 74. A listing of approved colorants in EU Member States may be found in Annex IV of the EC Cosmetics Directive 76/768/EEC, as amended. The national laws and regulations of other countries should be consulted for their requirements applicable to colorants. In addition to the differing national requirements as to specifications for colorants, the same colorants may have different required labeling names. For example, the labeling names for colorants in the U.S. and the EU, with few exceptions, is different. A further classification of colorants may be found in Chemical Classes. |
