Alkoxylated Amines are the alkoxylation products of primary and secondary Amines and their salts. In contrast to the Alkoxylated Amides, these amines are slightly basic and can be further reacted to yield tertiary amines and Quaternary Ammonium Compounds and their salts. If the alkoxylation is conducted on a compound containing more than one reactive hydrogen atom (an H atom attached to an O or N atom), the structure of the end product may be complex or even polymeric. Members of this group are represented by structures such as:
Primary amino groups have been substituted in both structures, (I and II), while a secondary amino group has also been ethoxylated in the second structure (II). R represents an alkyl group, and x+y+z indicates the degree of ethoxylation.
These materials can be used as emulsifiers, hair conditioners, suspending agents, and for similar purposes. A typical representative of this class is PEG-10 Hydrogenated Tallow Amine. |
