Alkyl Sulfates are the salts of the sulfuric acid monoesters of Fatty Alcohols. They are prepared by sulfation of the alcohols and subsequent neutralization with a suitable base, e.g., ammonia. They have the structure ROSO3-M+, where R represents the alkyl chain of the fatty alcohol and M+ the alkali metal or other cation. Alkyl Sulfates are Esters and, therefore, subject to hydrolysis, especially at extreme pHs. A typical example of this class is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.
They are widely used in shampoo and other cleansing applications. They are also frequently employed as auxiliary emulsifiers and solubilizers. Other related ingredients may be found under Alkyl Ether Sulfates. |
