The small group of cosmetically important substituted imidazolines includes the compounds having the following generic structure: These Heterocyclic materials are prepared by reacting a Fatty Acid derivative, RCO- with hydroxyethyl ethylenediamine. The Imidazolines are the intermediates in the synthesis of Alkylamido Alkylamines. They are named in accordance with the fatty acid used in the synthesis, although the carboxyl carbon atom has become part of the imidazoline ring. Thus, in Lauryl Hydroxyethyl Imidazoline, the R (alkyl group) in the above structure is C11H23-. The higher molecular weight substituted Imidazolines are basic compounds which are substantive to hair and skin and are used as conditioning and antistatic agents. They also may exhibit useful anticorrosive effects on metal surfaces. |
