Aldehydes are organic compounds of the general formula RCHO, where R may be aliphatic, alicyclic, heterocyclic or aromatic. In the case of the simplest aldehyde, formaldehyde, R is H. Aldehydes with two or more -CHO groups exist. Low molecular weight aliphatic aldehydes are chemically reactive and find only limited use in cosmetics, primarily as preservatives or germicides. Aldehydes with aromatic rings and those with additional functional groups are used as ingredients of flavors and fragrances.
