Alkyl Ether Sulfates are the salts of the sulfuric acid monoesters of Alkoxylated Alcohols. They are prepared by sulfation of the ethoxylated fatty alcohols and subsequent neutralization with a suitable base, e.g., triethanolamine. They have the structure R(OCH2CH2) nOSO3 -M+. R represents the aliphatic fatty alkyl chain derived from either natural or synthetic sources; n, the degree of ethoxylation, normally ranges from one to four but can be higher; M+ identifies an alkali metal or Amine. Sodium Laureth Sulfate is a typical representative of this class. Alkyl Ether Sulfates are Esters and, therefore, are subject to hydrolysis, especially at extreme pHs. They are more water soluble than the corresponding Alkyl Sulfates.
Alkyl Ether Sulfates are widely used in shampoos in light of their excellent cleansing and foaming properties. |
