Parfum is a term for ingredient labeling used to identify that a product contains a material or a combination of materials normally added to a cosmetic to produce or to mask a particular odor. The term Parfum shall be used for ingredient labeling in the European Union (EU) instead of listing the individual components of the fragrance under the 6th Amendment to the EU Cosmetics Directive. The INCI name permitted for labeling in the U.S. that corresponds to this EU labeling name is Fragrance. See Regulatory and Ingredient Use Information, regarding use of the INCI Names, Fragrance and Parfum in Volume 1, Introduction, Part A. |

■ Fragrance/Parfum
The terms Fragrance and Parfum are used as INCI labeling names in the United States and the EU, respectively. These names are used to identify that a product contains a material or combination of materials to produce or to mask a particular odor.
As this edition of the Dictionary goes to press, a proposed amendment to the EU Cosmetics Directive is being considered which would require the labeling of 26 fragrance ingredients on package labels using INCI nomenclature. Users of the Dictionary should contact CTFA or Colipa for the most recent information regarding this update.
